GN
#2649, Express Mail/Box Car -
built as a 50' box car in 1946,
but with freight trucks, air hoses and steam lines to permit
fast operation in passenger consists. Used for express
shipments and packaged mail. Car is in beautiful condition
with original "Empire Builder" paint job. The Great
Northern did not come into Colorado, but provided a northern
transcontinental route from Minneapolis to Seattle.
GN merged with the Northern Pacific, Seattle, Portland
& Spokane, CB&Q and the Frisco to form the Burlington
Northern in 1970. The BN has now merged with the Sante
Fe (ATSF) and renamed the BNSF. BNSF has a large
presence in Pueblo and the main line runs next to our museum
yard.
