PUEBLO UNION DEPOT

At the Museum
We have several tracks in the coach yard behind the Pueblo Union Depot and additional trackage running to the northwest toward the Riverwalk. We hope, in cooperation with the City of Pueblo, to create some type of rail operation between the Depot and Riverwalk in the future. The trackage is used to store vintage equipment for display and for operations. Our museum is small, but continues to grow and we do have some unusual pieces in the collection.

Primary Concentration of our Collection
The five roads which served Pueblo are the Denver & Rio Grande Western (D&RGW), the Sante Fe (ATSF), Colorado & Southern (C&S) part of the Burlington Route, the Missouri Pacific (MP) and the Colorado & Wyoming (C&W).

In the Heritage Center
We have smaller, indoor exhibits in the west end of the old freight depot of the Southeastern Colorado Heritage Center opposite the Depot.  While the freight depot is large, we share the space with other historical organizations and space for each group is limited.  For this reason and also to make our museum a more meaningful experience to visitors we change the subject of exhibits regularly.

Included in our Roster
We are home to the Sante Fe 2912, one of few remaining examples of the largest 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive. It was built in 1944 and sometimes saw service in the Pueblo area, usually providing fast service from LaJunta and most of the distance to Los Angeles. This was a long run for a steam engine.  The locomotive is now awaiting restoration to its original appearance.

Donations are needed to match an historic preservation grant to continue the restoration of this fine relic of the pinnacle of steam power technology. There is a special 2912 Fund dedicated to this goal. If you would like to help, please go to our Help Page - see Menu at left.

The PRF also owns and operates 3 GP-7 diesel/electric locomotives, formerly of the Colorado & Wyoming Railway (part of CF&I Steel) and painted in C&W colors.  See photo of our GP-7 #103 above.
